Homegrown Harvest
During the summer months you’ll find Sue and her son Brody at the market every week with a cheerful smile and their table full of natural balms. Sue started making kawakawa balm when Brody was just a wee boy because he was so bothered by eczema and she needed something natural to sooth and heal. Kawakawa (macropiper excelsum) is well known for its healing properties but back then it was hard to find an all natural product suitable for babies. Since there were no other natural applications available she decided she’d learn how to make it herself.
Over time, and as the need arose, she expanded her range to include an effective bug repellant that they could use when they went fishing. The warming muscle relieving rub was created for an elderly neighbour to relieve arthritis pain and for Brody after a kickboxing session. Later came a vapour rub to aid chesty conditions and an antiviral lipbalm. They now offer their handmade balms at a very affordable price so that others may benefit from using natural remedies.
Sue’s kawakawa balm is is made using a long steeping process to preserve as much of the good stuff as possible before blending with carefully selected beeswax and other essential oils and pouring into reusable, refillable BPA free containers for you. These are available in a 150ml pack and the handy 35ml size, perfect for carrying in your handbag, backpack or school bag.
The wild kawakawa is carefully harvested at Mitimiti in the north Hokianga in accordance with traditional guidance for optimal potency.
